Good Feng Shui can seem a bit difficult to grasp at times, so it’s no surprise if you feel overwhelmed at first. The key to getting started with this process is to focus on some specific aspects of your home’s Feng Shui home layout. Optimizing some main areas in your home allows you to improve the Feng Shui ambiance overall.

You may have noticed that this ancient Chinese design philosophy has gained a lot of mainstream popularity in recent years, and that’s no surprise when you look at its benefits. The goal of Feng Shui is intimately connected with increasing overall health and mental well-being, so lots of people are trying to replicate it in their homes and increase their wellness.

While the concept can be esoteric at times, the key to demystifying Feng Shui is just to pay attention to its parts, rather than trying to understand it all at once. By just working on individual areas of Feng Shui design, we can begin to comprehend its more complex overarching principles. Start with these steps to Feng Shui your home today.

A clutter-free space is among the most fundamental elements of Feng Shui.

A clutter-free space is among the most fundamental elements of Feng Shui.

One of the main elements of a good Feng Shui room layout is good spatial awareness. Reducing clutter and thereby removing obstacles is crucial because it allows for spatial balance to echo mental balance and vice versa. Put another way, clutter can make your life feel literal and figuratively constricted, and so to maximize our freedom for growth and possibilities, we must start by giving ourselves space.

Pay special attention to the clutter that can build up around entryways. Debris that prevents you from opening doors fully can be especially limiting. This is due to the ways this clutter steals space but also in the ways it can make our homes feel dimmer, both of which can hurt your ability to see possibilities and feel motivated.

Aim For Balance

In this context, this means having a balance of the five elements of Feng Shui, those being fire, earth, water, metal, and wood. As such, your goal is to have a balance of these materials in your interior design. This keeps your home’s interior aesthetic centered and balanced which makes for a home environment that exudes wellness.

Another part of this principle is to have a balance of Feng Shui colors for the home. These colors represent the five elements of good Feng Shui. For reference, red is fire, white is metal, green is wood, black is water, and brown is earth. To attain this balance of Feng Shui house colors and materials, try to have fixtures and furniture that include as many of these elements as possible, and compensate for any missing elements with decor. For example, a wooden table with metal legs can have a potted plant to represent earth and water.

Feng Shui Mirror Placement For Good Luck

A mirror should reflect items that emit positive energy.

A mirror should reflect items that emit positive energy.

Mirrors are an important component in Feng Shui design philosophy because they can help to increase energy flow. The main way they do this is by reflecting sunlight that can also help to reflect the most beautiful aspects of your home’s design.

To take the most advantage of the energizing qualities of mirrors you need to place them strategically in certain parts of your room. A mirror that reflects something ugly like a garbage can is not going to do much for the interior energy of your room. Instead, use the mirrors to reflect visually interesting parts of your interior design, such as a cool design or pattern with vibrant Feng Shui living room colors.

According to Feng Shui, plants signify growth, energy, and vitality.

To bring life energy into the home, you can’t go wrong with some biophilic additions to your interior design. To start, add some green luscious plants to your living room and other space to augment the natural vibrancy of your home. Introduce hanging plants and smaller plants on your windowsills to maximize the feel of freshness and vitality.

While you add these positive energy Feng Shui items, bear in mind that balance is crucial here as well. Try to avoid adding plants haphazardly but instead aim to place them in such a way that they add balance to the space and minimize clutter. It’s better if your plants do not block sunlight or act as obstructions since this can have negative effects on the energy of the space.

Add Lighting

According to simple Feng Shui tips, increasing the brightness of your interior is another great way of introducing a positive atmosphere to your home. An obvious way to do this is with extra lighting accents and some newer lighting fixtures. However, you can also achieve this with some more major changes such as adding windows, installing a skylight, or increasing the size of existing windows.

This will greatly increase natural light, which will help you introduce some extra energy and vibrancy to your interior design. Mirrors are also helpful in this situation as they help reflect light, as do lighter colors such as white and neutral hues.

Remove The Negative

The point of this is to maximize the nourishing aura of your home. A home is a place of rest, celebration, productivity, and gratitude. Maximize your qi (life energy) by emphasizing these qualities in your home.

This can be achieved with cozy neutral colors such as whites and beiges, a perfect balance of earthy materials and elements, and a generous amount of natural and artificial lighting throughout the home.

Reflect this positive energy with your flooring choices as well with hardwood or some neutral-colored tiling, and top it all off with beautiful skylights, or a simple and rustic roofing design that incorporates wood beams.

Maximize Spaciousness

Feng Shui dictates that a spacious interior invites new possibilities in your life.

Speaking of making a warmer space, spaciousness is another key element of a Feng Shui room layout. To achieve this, you need to emphasize the essentials, meaning removing anything from your life and your home that isn’t necessary.

Freeing up space in this way can be uncomfortable, but it allows you to glean many new possibilities that you might not have noticed before. Having said that, don’t fret if your free space gets filled again. According to Feng Shui, this is a natural part of the ebb and flow of the design cycle. A big part of understanding how this design philosophy works is to bear in mind that good Feng Shui both acknowledges and embraces impermanence.

In other words, if the space you clear gets filled, that’s a signal to clear it again and open up new possibilities as yet undiscovered. So, every space you free can be freed again in the future, making for an infinite number of new potential designs.

Focus On Entryways

An airy and uncluttered entryway is the cornerstone of any Feng Shui space.

An airy and uncluttered entryway is the cornerstone of any Feng Shui space.

Entryways are a crucial aspect of a good Feng Shui house layout, and so they deserve special attention. They are the portal through which energy enters and leaves the home. This is why doors are considered the “mouth of qi”. To optimize your entryways you must remove any obstacles that could keep qi from entering your home. This means removing clutter but also keeping your main entrance clean.

It is recommended that you keep the door and the areas around it regularly cleaned. This will increase the spaciousness and make the entrance more welcoming to all who pass through. Lighting is also important in this space. Be sure to add as much as possible through additional entryway lighting fixtures, and via windows in your door if possible.

Set Up a Commanding Position

This is another crucial part of Feng Shui. This principle is a deciding factor in how you position yourself in life and can determine your energy, motivation,  and well-being. Setting up an optimal commanding position entails placing your bed, desk, and other furniture arrangements in the right position in every room.

Each one of these fixtures represents a part of you, and so you must place them to emphasize certain aspects that you want to grow. For example, your Feng Shui desk represents your career and so you want to set it up in such a way that you can see the doorway without being directly in line with it when you sit at your work desk.

Likewise, your bed represents you and should also be set up in such a way that you can see the doorway without being in direct line of sight when lying in bed. This helps to promote positive energy towards these aspects of you, thereby improving your life.
