7 Cute Move-In Day Moments to Capture

It’s easy to get caught up in the midst of the chaos that normally entails moving into a new home. Staying organized and making sure everything on the moving-in checklist goes as smoothly as possible can be nerve-wracking to many people. However, you certainly don’t want to miss those once-in-a-lifetime moments that come with the big day. Anything like unpacking or exploring the interior are moments you might cherish for a long time — especially if it’s your first very own house. And what better way to immortalize these moments than preserving them in the form of pixels. Make sure to charge your camera, phone, Go-Pro, or whatever else you’ll be using to capture the precious memories that lie ahead.

1. On Your Way to the New Place

To build up the hype of arriving at your new home, don’t forget to take a video on your way there. From the moment you step into the car, you’ll want to capture every street, every turn, and every crossroad until you get to the new place. If the drive is too long, you can take segments of footage every five to ten minutes and make a montage later. Make sure a family member or a friend is driving if you’re the one taking the video — you wouldn’t want to ruin your moving day with a fender bender. If you’re alone, however, you could use a Go-Pro to capture the trip to your new house. Consider mounting it on a half-opened window or somewhere on the dashboard. As you get closer to the new property, make sure to capture all the cute coffeehouses, bakeries, and diners on video.

2. Behold That Curb Appeal

You’ll definitely want to capture the moment you pull up on the driveway till the second you grab your keys to the front door. A perfect selfie idea is to hold the keys up with your house in the background. Another way to immortalize this exciting moment is by lifting your keys up towards the house and taking a photo — without you in the frame this time. Make sure to take a video as you’re walking up to the front door to open it, and perhaps quick panoramic footage of the direct vicinity of the house. A couple of photos as you’re carrying stuff to your new place would also be nice. Before you go in, you may want to take a few seconds to have a good look at the grandeur of your new palazzo; it might be just a house to other people, but to you, it’s a castle.

3. Knock Knock…

The moment of truth is here. This is perhaps the most important part of the whole process — the moment you’ve been waiting for. The minute you enter your new humble abode is undoubtedly one for the camera. Consider taking a video from the moment you place the keys in the keyhole until you step inside. If you have kids, they're probably more excited than you are. A video of them eagerly darting through the entryway is a must — just hope they don't step on mud before making their way in. That being said, you may want to shop for a lovely new doormat to go with your new home. And why wouldn't you take a selfie with the new doormat you're about to place? It's your moment — own it.

4. A First Tour of the Place

Don’t put away the camera just yet because now that you’re in, the real adventure begins. Make a tour of the whole house, taking a video as you go. While you’re exploring your new living spaces, it can be a good idea to keep an eye out for details that you may want to have a look at later on. For instance, a sagging cabinet door is a common issue that you may come across. It is most likely due to faulty installation and fixing it is a piece of cake. But for now, don’t let such trivialities get in the way of your big day — you probably won’t forget about it either because you most likely have it on video now. There’s probably a lot more ground to cover so move on to the next room. Once you’re done with the interior living spaces, you’ll definitely want to include any backyard areas in the video as well. Take a video of where you’ll be placing the trampoline you recently ordered from Amazon — and where you’ll be building a doghouse for your doggo. You may also want to take some ‘before’ pictures of the rooms prior to setting everything up; these will make for before and after comparisons later on.

5. Unpacking

Once the tour is over, it is time to unpack the boxes and get everything set up. Since it might be too long for a video, a great idea is to take a timelapse of the entire process. It can be all the more special if you let everyone in on it — even an inquisitive pet. Plus, nothing is more adorably hilarious than seeing your kids moving around at lightning speed on the timelapse video. To make unpacking easier and quicker, it may help to declutter your belongings prior to moving out of your previous home. Being as prepared as possible will make your move-in day all the more enjoyable. Don’t worry about where to place random items such as your decorative wicker basket. You can always rearrange parts of the interior later on until you achieve that perfect layout. But for now, focus on the preliminary set-up and remember that the camera is still running the timelapse.

6. Before and After Photos

This is where those ‘before’ images come in handy. With your new home all set up and ready for action, consider taking the ‘after’ shots to create a series of before and after photos. Such comparisons are always a treat for the eye and they will be all the more special if it’s your very own house in those pictures. You could also take a second tour of the house now that the rugs are run and the pillows are thrown. Make sure to check your camera’s or phone’s battery level every once in a while. Consider having a power bank at hand in case you want to charge it on the go.

7. First Meal in Your New Home

Among the first of everything you will have in your house, the first meal is probably somewhere on top of the list. Whether you’re having a quick snack or a full course, it’s definitely one for the records — and of course, for Instagram. Since you’ll probably be tired from all the unpacking, you could order a couple of pizzas (make sure to tag the pizzeria in the Instagram post). Just be careful not to spill any marinara sauce on the upholstery — that stuff is a pain to clean. Don’t hesitate to take as many pictures as you like; after all, it’s not every day that you move into a new home.
