Why concrete pavers are gaining in popularity.

Dear Contractors.com,

I’m looking into having my front walkway redone, and I’m hearing that one of the more popular options these days is interlocking concrete pavers. Is it a good option, or should I consider something else?

– I. F., Washington, DC

The best solution for you depends on your budget, your personal preferences, and the look you want for your home. Only you can decide those things. But there are a number of reasons why concrete pavers are gaining in popularity.

One of the biggest benefits of concrete pavers is their flexibility in terms of design options. “They come in such a variety of shapes, colors and patterns that you can do just about anything with them,” explains Mike Crable, owner of Darkhorse Inc.

Interlocking concrete pavers are also very flexible in a physical sense, unaffected by regular shifting of the ground. “They are designed to move in unison, so the patio or walkway will remain intact through freeze-thaw cycles, and over the longer term with the natural settling of the earth,” continues Crable.

“The risk of damage from earth shifting is virtually nil, whereas a regular concrete slab might be in danger of cracking,” adds Crable, whose company specializes in patios, retaining walls and landscaping.

One of the greatest strengths of concrete pavers is their durability. According to Crable, pavers are three times stronger than regular poured concrete surfaces, and more durable than black asphalt. Each paver is manufactured with joints to allow a small amount of movement and prevent cracking.

“Concrete paver systems can take a lot of abuse, and they can last for generations. They’re expected to last upwards of 50 years!” says an excited Crable, who often recommends concrete paver systems for his clients’ walkways, patios and pool enclosures.

Whatever you choose, be sure to research your contractors before hiring them.
