What’s the difference between expensive and cheaper patio doors?

Dear Contractors.com,

We’re replacing our patio door and we’ve seen a few different ones in a range of prices. My question is, what’s the real difference between the cheaper doors and the more expensive ones. Is it worth it to go with a more expensive door?

– R.W., Gaithersburg, MD

Jim Cassell of Variety Windows and Doors explains that patio doors are no different from most products – you get what you pay for. A less expensive door can’t handle a lot of use over a long period of time, won’t have a lifetime warranty and offers limited options for colors, finishes or hardware.

“On the other hand, more expensive patio doors provide you with lots of options, including stainable or paintable interiors to perfectly match your home,” says Cassell, whose family-owned and operated business boasts over 30 years of experience, and does high-end remodeling work in some of the finest homes and embassies in DC.

Higher priced doors are generally constructed better and there’s a variety of different frame materials to choose from, such as vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum-clad. You can choose different insulation levels for your glass as well as your frame. And if security is a big concern, a multi-point locking system is a must, and it’s only available on more expensive doors.

“Higher end patio doors have features such as blinds or shades between the glass, and various types of insulated glass which will help you save money on heating and cooling your home,” explains Cassell, whose company is an Energy Star Partner offering energy-saving products approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

To help you decide what quality of doors to buy, think about how they’ll be used. Will your family use them as an entrance instead of the front door? Are your children going to use them a lot? More expensive doors will be able to handle heavy wear and tear. Longevity is only found in more expensive products.

“Whichever door you choose, make sure the contractor installing the product for you is trained by the manufacturer,” advises Cassell. “This ensures proper operation and a full warranty.” Be sure to review contractors online at www.Contractors.com.
