Installing or Replacing Interior Doors, by Pattie Hughes
If you purchase an older home, or have lived in your home for many years, eventually you will need to think about replacing the interior doors. Adding a new space or dividing a space will require new doors to be installed.
Aging doors may not perform as well as they once did, or you may just prefer a different look for your home and want to replace the existing doors. In most cases, this is a relatively simple job that can be accomplished over a weekend.
Interior doors are lighter than exterior doors
The materials used in the construction of interior doors are generally lighter than those used in exterior doors. The reasons for this difference include less need for security on the inside of your home, and exterior doors needing more in terms of weather proofing to protect your home against the elements. As a result, interior doors are less expensive.
Solid wood, solid core or hollow
There is a variety of different materials and construction types used in doors for the inside of your home. However, there are three basic types of interior doors: solid wood, solid core or hollow.
Solid wood doors can be smooth or paneled. They are a great choice for appearance and have a long lifespan. Solid core doors are similar to hollow doors. The main difference is that the hollow section of the door is filled with particleboard. This makes the door stronger and more soundproof than a standard hollow door.
Hollow interior doors are low-cost, making them very popular with homeowners. The frame of the door is covered with a smooth veneer. The inside space is filled with compressed cardboard.
Handyman can install doors
Installing interior doors is a fairly simple procedure that can be done by any handyman. Pre-hung interior doors are an easy solution. With these, the door is already set in the frame. The hinges are included. The door just needs to be set in the opening, plumbed to be sure it is straight and then nailed into place.

Replace door without replacing frame
If the frame is intact and not damaged, the job can be even easier. You can purchase replacement doors without replacing the frame. The installation process is similar, but a lot easier and faster. Doors are available in a variety of sizes to fit most homes. Before you buy the door, be sure it is right for the existing frame.
The door can be painted either before it is installed or after. Once the door is secured, you are ready to add the hardware. Decorative doorknobs can make a huge difference in the look of interior doors for little money.
