Finishing your basement to suit your needs
Dear Contractors.com,
We are planning to finish the basement in our home, but not sure how to divide the space for maximum efficiency. Do you have any tips on how to proceed?

The best way to start is to think about how you’re going to use the space. Do you need a closed off room for a bedroom or office, or will it be open-concept? Do you need space for storage? Will you be installing a bathroom? A bar? Etc. You may want to imagine different setups and make sketches (drawing to scale is best to get a sense of proportions).
Hiring a designer to plan the layout of your basement is a good idea. Designers are specifically trained in organizing space for maximum efficiency and enjoyment. Contractors who specialize in basement finishing can also be a good source of advice.
“We would take a look at the infrastructure, including plumbing, electrical, and weight bearing walls and columns first, and let them know if their plan is feasible or not,” explains Al Honarvar, owner of Advance Construction Concepts. “We look at the whole picture to include the customer’s specific requirements, efficiency of space, proportions of the rooms, and specifically the natural and convenient flow of the space.”
Honarvar’s team uses their creativity, combined with their years of experience to find the best flow of space. For instance, a key factor for small basements is choosing the right location of rooms and having your recreation room as large as possible.
Another factor is the role the windows will play to extend the visual effect of having a larger space; or where large mirrors can be used to expand the visual effect – doubling the perceived size of the room, compared to the actual space.
“All of these factors and some other factors like color coordination of the walls, floor, furniture, and use of lights can add or take space from your basement. So take your time to figure out these issues in advance, or work with an expert who has experience with these things,” concludes Honarvar, who proudly adds that Advance Construction Concepts treats every job like it was their own home.
