Are Energy Star Windows worth the extra cash?

Dear Contractors.com,

I need to replace the older windows in my home. Is it worth the extra money to buy Energy Star windows, or should I just stick to the basic, cheaper windows?

– E.S., Springfield, VA

“There is no doubt that Energy Star windows are the way to go, for many reasons,” enthuses Charles “Gator” Russell, of Masterpiece Remodelers. “In fact, since the program started, I have never sold a window that wasn’t Energy Star approved.”

(Energy Star is a government-backed program which helps protect the environment by promoting energy efficient products, appliances and practices.)

First, Energy Star windows will save you money and energy – usually 30 to 40%. “Your new windows will pay for themselves with energy savings in 5 to 9 years, depending on the size of your home, number of windows and current energy bills,” Gator explains. “With fuel costs increasing almost daily there’s never been a better time to change windows.”

You will also be eligible for a tax credit for purchasing energy-efficient windows (as well as other products and appliances). The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT) qualifies you for a tax credit of up to $500, for energy-efficient products purchased through 2007. The tax rebate alone won’t offset the cost of windows, but any tax savings is good.

But money isn’t the only factor. Energy Star windows will give you added comfort by keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. And they will protect the interior of your home from harmful UV rays which can damage carpets and wood floors, curtains, furniture, artwork and photographs.

And think of the environmental benefits. According to the Energy Star website (www.energystar.gov), in 2004 the Energy Star program helped us save “enough energy to power 24 million homes and avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 20 million cars – all while saving $10 billion.”

“When choosing your windows, make sure that they are Energy Star-approved for this area,” Gator advises. “We have significant heating and cooling seasons, so you need a window that reflects heat outside in the summer and back inside in the winter.”

“Some contractors may try to save you money by installing windows that are Energy Star-approved for other regions,” Gator continues, “but they just won’t provide you with the same level of energy efficiency.” So be sure to research your contractors carefully before hiring them.
