1. What is Contractors.com?
Contractors.com is the world's most searched contractor directory. It's an online resource where homeowners research contractors for all types of home improvement, repair and building projects. Homeowners look through contractors' profiles and contact them directly. Homeowners may also submit their project to Contractors.com, which becomes a lead that certified contractors may purchase.

Contractors.com helps contractors promote their business on the Internet. A company listing in the Contractors.com Directory includes the company's contact information, link to their company website, types of services offered, a Reviews Page for customer testimonials, and a Photo Gallery. When a homeowner contacts you from your directory listing, the lead is free. Certified members can also purchase leads from our Lead Store.

Sign up online or call 1-800-228-4990, 8am-5pm EST, Mon-Fri.

2. How does the service work?
When you sign up, you create a company profile which becomes your listing in the Contractors.com directory. Your listing includes a company description, services offered and territory, phone number, link to your company website, photos, customer reviews, etc. When homeowners search on Contractors.com (or any of our partner sites, such as Google Local, SuperPages, etc.) for a contractor in your territory for a service that you offer, your listing appears in the search results along with other similar listings. Homeowners look through the listings and contact the contractors they like best. There is no charge to you for these contacts. The higher in the directory your listing appears, the more contacts you can expect (provided your listing has complete information and more than 5 customer reviews). Premium Certified members appear highest in the directory, above Basic Certified members, which are above Free listings.

Instead of searching the directory for a contractor, homeowners may choose to submit their project details to us and have interested contractors call them. These leads (and leads generated by our partner sites) can be purchased by certified members only.

3. How can a homeowner find me on Contractors.com?
There are two main ways a homeowner can locate your profile in the Contractors.com directory:

  • Searching by Job Type and Postal Code – Homeowners choose the type of project and enter their postal code. If your company provides that service in that area, your listing will be displayed in the search results. Premium Member listings are displayed before Basic Member listings, which are displayed before Free Listings.

  • Company Name Search – A customer that has heard of your company can type your name into the Company Name search engine. Many homeowners use the website to research a company they've heard of, and reviews from previous customers can play an important role in their hiring decisions.

  • There is no charge when a homeowner contacts you from the directory.

4. How do I get leads through Contractors.com?
Contractors.com generates leads in two ways:

  • Directory Searches - A homeowner searches the Contractors.com directory to find contractors in their area who do the type of work they need. The homeowner then browses contractor profiles, viewing customer reviews, photo galleries, and additional company details. The homeowner can then directly contact the contractor(s) they prefer, or click through to your company website. These leads are FREE.

  • Submitted Projects - When homeowners do not wish to contact contractors themselves, they submit their project to Contractors.com, and we pass it on to our network of contractors. Contractors can then choose to purchase the lead. Leads are priced by job category, and each lead can be purchased by up to 3 contractors.

5. Why should I become a certified member of Contractors.com?

  • Certified members appear at the top of the directory, where customers see you first. And when homeowners contact you, the lead is free.
  • Only certified members can purchase leads.
  • We certify your company as properly licensed and insured (upon meeting requirements), which gives homeowners incentive to call you.
  • We contact premium members' previous customers to get Reviews on their behalf.

6. I'm very busy now. Why should I get involved with Contractors.com when I’m already busy?
Many of the contractors on Contractors.com are busy. Most good contractors are. But educated homeowners understand that good contractors typically are busy, and prefer booking far in advance with a reputable contractor rather than taking the first person available to do the job. You may be busy now, but what about 6 or 9 months from now? Your contractors.com listing can help you stay busy year-round, and stay booked well into the future.

Think of your Contractors.com listing like your ad in the telephone book. You need to be there even when you're busy. But your Contractors.com listing goes further by allowing you to display pictures of your work and your team, and an unlimited number of customer testimonials (which serve as word-of-mouth referrals, encouraging homeowners to call you). And you can update your information at any time, so it's always up to date - whether you change your phone number or complete a new, impressive project that you'd like to show off.

Your certified listing also gives you third-party credibility from Contractors.com, a trusted and respected home improvement resource.

7. Why do I need to be on the Internet?
In 2005, Business Week reported that "70% of homeowners are using the Internet to make their purchasing decisions." That number is growing all the time, as the Internet replaces more conventional forms of customer research such as telephone books.

The Internet provides contractors with consistent exposure to new customers at a fraction of the cost of other marketing strategies.

Internet users have a higher level of income than non-users, so your listing on Contractors.com will promote your business, day and night, without effort, and attract the type of business you're looking for.

Contractors.com is the world’s most searched online contractor directory, and a trusted resource for potential customers to research your company on the Internet. Your company’s profile page - with your contact information, customer reviews, photos of your work, services you provide, area you work in, and licensing and insurance information - gives potential customers the information they need to make better decisions and to contact you.

8. How much does it cost?
See membership information or call 1-800-228-4990, 8am-5pm EST, Mon-Fri.

9. What are my payment options?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit cards, or you can pay by check. Memberships are paid annually.

10. How do I get started?
Getting started is easy. When you sign up the information you provide is added to your company's directory listing (this information can be changed at any time). Once we receive faxed copies of your licensing and insurance documents, your company will be certified and you may purchase leads (certified members only). You may call 1-800-228-4990, 8am-5pm EST, Mon-Fri for assistance or to sign up by phone.

11. How does a homeowner review a contractor on Contractors.com?
You can request reviews from your customers by giving them a printed Review Form or by sending them a request by email. Both options are available from within My Account, under My Reviews. We also encourage contractors to add reviews from previous customers using one of the methods here. The value of your company listing is heavily influenced by the number and quality of your reviews!

In addition to written reviews, Contractors.com has a rating system so homeowners can get a sense of a contractor’s quality at a glance. The Contractors.com rating system is set up to ensure a complete and fair rating for each contractor. These are the categories Contractors.com uses to evaluate each contractor:

  • Timeliness - Timeliness in responding to the customer’s questions and concerns, and throughout the entire project

  • Budget - Did they remain within their stated budget? (Change orders excepted, of course)

  • Quality - The quality of their workmanship

  • Overall satisfaction

A contractor’s average rating and the number of ratings appear on the contractor’s Profile Page. References (contact information including name, phone and email) are kept strictly confidential.

12. What happens if I get a bad rating?
Contractors.com wants you to receive a fair rating each and every time one is posted. You may occasionally receive a negative score. To ensure that each rating is valid we have developed a thorough process to protect the contractor:

  • If we find a fraudulent or invalid testimonial it will not be posted.

  • If you dispute a testimonial or rating, Contractors.com will mediate the disputed rating, and make every effort to settle the differences.

  • A contractor’s average rating and the number of ratings appear on the contractor’s Profile page, so one bad rating amongst many won’t harm your reputation.

  • Contractors in our network are notified of any negative ratings received, so they can work with the customer to resolve the problem. If the problem cannot be resolved, Contractors.com will act as a mediator with final say of what is posted on the website.
